Built almost 2000 years ago and thought to have formed part of a large ‘mansio’ (official hotel), this wonderful Scheduled Monument in the heart of Dover is the most extensive example of Roman painted plaster walls found north of the Alps.
After essential works to ensure visitor safety and to conserve the monument, this Roman treasure is due to reopen to the public on 14 September. Coinciding with Dover’s Heritage Open Weekend, it will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, and subsequently open on Saturdays until the end of November. Entrance is free, although donations are welcome.
Guided group tours are available to book for a small charge. Please email RPH@dover.gov.uk for further information.
